PORT CHARLOTTE -- Joan Fischer once led the effort to get an elevator in the Port Charlotte library. Now she wants to serve on the Charlotte County Commission.

Fischer, 73, and a Democrat, has never run for public office. But, she said, "I've faced stiff competition all my life."

Fischer hopes to replace District 4 Commissioner Matt DeBoer, who has announced he will not run again.
